# LDAP OIDs

+Our global entry into the registry of object identifiers (*OIDs*):

+From that page is a web-archived explanation of how the OID tree is constructed (included below).
+
+Custom OIDs (Object Identifiers) are used to extend the schema for specialized purposes (for which no current standard schema exists).
+Any entity may have an "arc", or a portion of the global hierarchy by registering with IANA.
+The Computer Science Department at Caltech has 1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7.
+
+The ".8186." belongs to Caltech, and ".7." was granted from the ITS Department to CS.
+Internally to CS, we have branched even further so that SNMP has a branch and LDAP has a separate branch:
+*1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7.1* is for LDAP attributes.%BR%
+*1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7.2* is for LDAP objectclasses.%BR%
+*1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7.3* is for SNMP objects.
